The Process

The  benefits of focussing on performance during schematic design are several.
 
For example, orientation is easily influenced.
 
Yet also, the ability to include mixed mode ventilation, daylight harvesting or personalised air conditioning is easily achieved at this point.
 
The role and composition of the facade elements is defined at this point and this is extraordinarily difficult to modify either during construction or in operation.
 
Literature from the Green Building Council of  Australia inlcudes a quotation from Joseph Fromm:-
 
"By the time a building has had 1% of it's budget spent, it has assured 70% of it's emissions"
 
 
The SEED process starts with assessing SITE for opportunities. 
  • What opportunities does the climate present?
  • Can the micro-climate, the weather or the aquifers below assist us ?
  • Who are the neighbours and what synergies may be present in their use of energy & water?
 This leads us naturally to consider the SHAPE of the building.  
  • Are we best to have significant exposure to external conditions or a more fugitive response?
With the Site opportunities identified and the preferred Shape understood, we can define the FACADE requirements.
  • Do we prefer insulation or shading to control radiant temperatures?
  • What sort of airtightness requirements should be specified?
  • Do we have appropriate distribution of daylight?
 Once we have established the contribution of architecture to minimising energy, we can now cost-effectively consider what sort of building SERVICES are relevant. Building services have a shorter lifetime, are easier to upgrade, and often experience greater advances in technology than other building elements so it makes sense to focus on architecture first.
 
Once the final demands are understood, an analysis of SOURCES is undertaken. 
  • Is there a role for renewable energy?
  • Can alternative sources of water be used?
